The National Institute for the Deaf (NID) has taken a major step towards long-term sustainability with the commissioning of an impressive new photovoltaic (PV) solar power system. This initiative will not only result in significant savings on the institute’s monthly electricity costs but will also make a valuable contribution to the local electricity grid and the environment.
Financial Sustainability for the Future
The primary goal of the new solar installation is to significantly reduce NID’s operating costs. By generating its own electricity, the institute can save essential financial resources and redirect them towards its core mission of services to the Deaf and persons with hearing loss. These savings will help ensure that NID can continue providing its invaluable services and support to the Deaf community in a financially sustainable manner for many years to come.
Impressive Clean Energy Generation
The system is mounted on a robust, ground-mounted steel structure and generates approximately 1.74 GWh (gigawatt-hours) of clean energy annually. To put this into perspective, this is equivalent to the combined annual energy production of approximately 125 average residential solar power systems.
The system generates three-phase electricity, which is converted and stepped up to 11,000 V (11 kV) before being fed directly into the municipal electricity grid. In addition, the installation includes a dedicated 100 kWh battery. This battery has been specifically designed to reduce NID’s peak electricity demand during busy periods (peak shaving), further optimising the institute’s overall energy footprint.
A Smaller Carbon Footprint, A Stronger Local Grid
The environmental benefits of the project are equally significant. By largely switching to solar power – a renewable energy source – NID will avoid approximately 1,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
Any surplus electricity generated by the system is sold back to the Breede Valley Municipality (BVM). This win-win partnership reduces the municipality’s reliance on Eskom’s coal-fired power stations, contributing to a greener future for the entire community.
A Collaborative Success Story
A project of this scale is the result of strong collaboration and technical excellence. It would not have been possible without NID’s investment and vision, together with the Breede Valley Municipality’s progressive approach and willingness to integrate renewable energy into its local electricity network.
- Bührmann Consulting Engineers conducted the comprehensive feasibility study. They carefully analysed the expected energy yield and the impact on the municipal grid to ensure that the project would be both environmentally responsible and technically sustainable.
- Sustainable Power Solutions, the PV contractor, was responsible for the physical installation and construction of the system. Their technical expertise, dedication, and hard work ensured the successful completion of this complex project.
