The NID Sign Language Centre (NID SLC) serves both the Deaf and the hearing communities by developing content, and by doing research in South African Sign Language (SASL).
The SLC focuses on SASL, because it is an under-researched and an under-documented language. Although it is the language of at least 234 000 people (Census 2011), there has nevertheless been a lack of work done in this field. The consequences of this are that Deaf people have daily struggles in communication with the surrounding community. There are also stereotypes about what sign languages are and the ignorance of the predominantly hearing public, add to these struggles.
We believe that our work addresses these struggles by educating the public through resources and content that we develop, which directly translates to increased accessibility. Please see below for our current projects:
