Our care

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.”

Helen Keller

How can we care for you?

Our Deaf Adult Care facility was established in 1978 as Lewensruimte for the Deaf on our NID Campus in Worcester, South Africa. It is a mini-village, where each Deaf individual – with an intellectual disability and/or multiple disabilities – receives the care necessary for them to reach their full potential.

Here they receive residential care and therapeutic activities on a daily basis in a Deaf-friendly and calming environment.

This is a therapeutic and healing space, offering sustainable care and developmental programmes that follow the Social Competency Model as a guide.

We have four group homes that accommodate 10 -15 residents each. As well as seven small flatlets. Each group home has its own house mother or father who is responsible for caring for the residents.

These carers offer help with empathy and aid the residents with visual communication and South African Sign Language.

NID always has healthy management principals at heart and residential care is given in a cost-effective manner.

Residents are also actively part of the decision making at the facility and do this through:

A positive appreciation of human dignity

  Community interaction

  A holistic biopsychosocial approach

Various developmental programmes focusing on independent functioning

Our NID Therapeutic Activity Groups

We have a therapeutic section at the facility which accommodates the majority of our multiple-disabled Deaf clients who require constant supervision, guidance and assistance. It is a safe environment where they can actively participate in meaningful and enjoyable activities depending on their aptitude, interests and personal choice.

Daily activities include:

  Needlework

  Making products from recycled wood

  Beadwork

  Contract work for companies

  Sports

  Life skills training

  Basic literacy training

  Reading interesting newspaper articles

  Occupational therapy

  Biokinetics

  Tea and lunch

Our NID Business & Training Units

The residents who show greater potential for development in work-related skills are helped within various business training units on the NID Campus.

These include:

Laundry, tea garden, guest house, maintenance, woodwork and joinery.

Here the focus is on developing specific work skills within a caring and supportive environment – encouraging each individual, through loving guidance to reach their full potential.

At NID we believe that persons with hearing loss deserve to be treated with dignity in all phases of life.

Our Deaf Elderly care facility, also at our NID Campus in Worcester, looks after the elderly who are needing 24/7 residential care in a Deaf-friendly environment.

Here we have dedicated staff to care and support them daily, in a homely atmosphere which caters for their unique communication needs. They are also able to participate in a variety of activities as well as leisure and care programmes throughout the year.

Caring for those who once cared for us.
